How to Fight Progressive Stage Fright

Most people are nervous the first time that they get up in front of a group of people to talk.  It is a perfectly natural thing for these people to experience stage fright to one degree or another.  The problem is that some people who have to get up in front of a group to speak on a regular basis never really lose that fear of public speaking.  For some people it becomes something that gets progressively worse and this is a very difficult thing to overcome.  An experienced speaker should be poised and comfortable in front of their audience and there should not really be any need for the audience to recognize any nervousness on their part.  If you are someone that has a difficult time shaking progressive stage fright then here are some tips to help you to overcome it.

One of the most common things that people do that make them nervous is to be unprepared for the speech.  If you are going to be comfortable speaking about the subject in front of an audience then you really need to be intimately familiar with that subject.  The problem many people face is that they tend to procrastinate when it comes to doing the research necessary to really put together a great presentation.  When they find themselves suddenly in front of a group of people speaking about a subject which they are not familiar with, they get extremely nervous and never really get their point across.  Groups of people are a very funny thing and the psychology that is connected with speaking to a group could take years to fully understand.  To break it down simply, however, if you are comfortable with your subject and present it well, your audience will react positively and this will help you to overcome your stage fright.

Another reason that many people become progressively nervous whenever they have to give multiple group presentations is that they are not sure of themselves and doubt their abilities as a public speaker.  This is not an easy thing to overcome but it can certainly be improved upon over time.  What you have to keep in mind whenever you are preparing your presentation is that the majority of your audience may never have had to get up in front of a group of people and speak before.  Most of them would be much more nervous than what you are and they realize this as well.  Prepare yourself well and give a fantastic presentation and then feed off of the emotions of the audience as you are giving it.  By doing so, you will gain confidence in your abilities as a public speaker.

Try to look back on your past as a public speaker.  No doubt you will be able to identify many victories as well as problems that were associated with your past presentations.  Don't think that you are working backwards in your abilities.  Learn from any mistakes and press on towards becoming the absolute best public speaker that you can possibly be.  This will help you to gain whatever confidence is necessary for you to speak well in front of a group on a consistent basis.
